Panel Description: Listen and react to the views of a diverse panel of CIOs, educators, and not-for-profit directors on how well we are doing in preparing our next generation of IT leaders. We are spending a good deal of our IT professional development budgets on helping people stay current on their technical skills, but are we preparing them to become the leaders of tomorrow? We hear we are falling behind on inspiring our best and brightest students to go into the IT field–myth or fact? If fact, what can/should we be doing to change this pattern.\
I will then fly to Seattle for the Independent Sector conference. I will participate in a panel discussion with Beth Tuttle (President and CEO, Cultural Data Project) and Phil Buchanan (President, The Center for Effective Philanthropy) to explores how non-profits can leverage data for operational and strategic gains.
Data provides real opportunities to increase efficiency, decision making, and impact. But what if the numbers aren’t relevant? What if the stats are misleading? And what if the sheer amount of data is simply overwhelming such that an organization is swimming in data but unable to stay afloat? Don’t be data rich but information poor. Join us to discuss data sharing and monitoring, as well as the attendant issues of privacy and ethics in a world of big data.
Nonprofits and other social change organizations are lagging their counterparts in the scientific and business communities in collecting and analyzing the vast amounts of data that are being generated by digital technology. Four steps need to be taken to improve the use of big data for social innovation.
Over the next few weeks, my research team and I will be interviewing prominent App Developers. All interviewees contributed apps for various challenges run by Federal agencies (e.g. the FCC/Knight Foundation Apps for Communities Challenge, NLM Show Off Your Apps Challenge, etc), and, in most cases, even received prizes and recognition for their apps. These interviews are being conducted for our project, Citizen Apps as a Democratizing Technology: Challenges and Opportunities for Federal Agencies, which has received funding from the IBM Center for the Business of Government. When we complete interviews, and conditional on receiving permission from the interviewee, I will be featuring the developer, their app, and key take-a-ways from the conversation on my blog. Below is a list of developers who we have interviewed to date:

- Curtis Chang (creator of Homeless-Santa Clara County, Second Prize and Best Design and Visualization at the FCC/Knight Foundation Apps for Communities Challenge)
- John Schimmel (creator of Access Together, Runner Up and Most Replicable at the FCC/Knight Foundation Apps for Communities Challenge)
This is an exciting project and we are learning a lot from our interviews. Our goal is to arrive at actionable knowledge that will increase the effectiveness of challenges run by federal agencies. In addition to publishing our findings in a report, we will be writing several smaller pieces for various outlets. I just returned from a wonderful trip to Chicago. During my visit, I had the opportunity to talk with senior leaders of the University of Illinois at Chicago. At a special event called Celebrating the College of Business Administration (CBA), I was honored by being inducted into the Alumni Leadership Academy (ALA) as part of the 2011 Class. “The ALA celebrates those alumni who best exemplify the College of Business Administration’s commitment to leadership, teaching, research and service. Inductions to the academy are held every year to honor outstanding CBA alumni whose contributions in these areas raise the stature and standing of the college.” I dedicated my award to the undergraduate advisors I had during my time at the CBA.
Last December, Sally and I created the Desouza Family Endowment at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Here is the press release from UIC. The Desouza Family Endowment will support a yearly scholarship given to a student at the UIC Honors College. This scholarship will support academic excellence and show appreciation for students’ contributions to the UIC community. We believe that all students should receive encouragement for their dreams and aspirations, through support of their undergraduate studies. We hope to support the best and brightest at UIC – students who not only excel academically but who also go beyond the classroom and make a positive impact on the UIC community through community service and leadership in student organizations.
